Show Notes

In this episode we meet Martin Broad, a motivational speaker from Springsure using his life experiences to educate youth about the dangers of risky behaviour, alcohol, and brain injury.

After a night out on the town to celebrate a new job, Martin realised he'd locked himself out of his apartment.  He tried to climb up the side of the building to get to the open door on his balcony - and fell seven storeys to the ground, sustaining severe injuries including acquired brain injury.

These days Martin owns his own home, has his drivers licence back, and is building his career as a speaker sharing his experience and insights.  His business shares the initials "ABI" with his disability - but in this case, it stands for Actually Bloody Incredible.

Speaker 0 00:00:05 Choice and control podcast, celebrating people with disability in this season, we're talking about access inclusion and the national disability insurance game. This podcast series is brought to you by carers Queensland and dis local area coordination partner in the community. Good eye on Jodie Vanda waitering. Today, we're talking to Martin broads. Marlin comes from Springshore. It's about four hours Southwest of Rockhampton in the central Highlands region. Today Marlin's public speaker using his experiences and his big bushel, Eric and personality to educate people about disability and about the dangers of alcohol and risk-taking behavior. This is a particular issue for Marfan because back in the day, when he was a younger bloke, he scored himself a very well-paid job out in the mines in the Northern territory. And he celebrated getting that job by going and playing up a bit. And that's when his life changed forever. Speaker 1 00:01:02 That, and I gotta be drunk, but I always had my back cause it was on the same floor. And I sit in my house. That's why I'm, I'm not going to be loud after Speaker 0 00:01:23 The accident. What was the process of recovering? Speaker 1 00:01:26 They said the best doctor in sight. He got fired from Brisbane and also for about two or three months when I come to I couldn't walk. So I got a wheelchair for a month. Then I'll call you. I'll be at a hospital and look out yourself, clean for yourself. Pretty much. It's getting better. Who wants to be in hospital really wants to be in hospital. I was just very, I had to get better that didn't think I had enough money in money. And now the best thing is no debt. I don't have the power of the line and I'm still happy. And then my home life, because the national disability insurance game, this is my home life. Speaker 0 00:02:52 What support do you get through the NDIS? You get the, uh, the timing Emerald and there's also sort of therapy and ongoing support. Like I get Speaker 1 00:03:00 Gym twice a week to weight gyms. I used to be pretty fit and I've never worked behind the desk. Same back to the gym. Certainly India will tell you, going to look forward to getting better old time. And also one thing I did recently, I actually ended up getting my bag, Speaker 0 00:03:40 Huge deal living in, uh, in spring shore and, and coming into Emerald because there's not a lot of options as far as like public transport and stuff out that way. Speaker 1 00:03:48 My mom's getting on a bit too. Now it tells me to force it on the Monday, provide transport to get me in there. Panel time. Hadn't had that because I do want to be independent again, as normal as possible as possible. Speaker 0 00:04:10 Martin's now sharing his experiences through his new found role as a public speaker, educating other people about disability and about the dangers of alcohol and risky behavior, starting with one of the groups may be most at risk of that school leavers. Speaker 1 00:04:36 Don't be silly because every kids do silly things down quantum school, especially in there. And then we'll talk to them every year. And this year, especially the kids who are very involved and they're asking me bad questions, Speaker 0 00:05:06 Having that message come from someone who's lived through it. And someone who's a local, um, would make a big impact on the kids too. Speaker 1 00:05:16 The main was in the hospital. So I'd probably think about Navajo differently because I'm actually sounding a lot more strength from someone who's actually ugly. Speaker 0 00:05:39 What's next for you now, Martin, what plans have you got for the future? Speaker 1 00:05:45 I bet <inaudible> at the moment. My problem is, is that's all I need. I just have to get my post more acid. So maybe I might've actual speaker. I actually have my business cards because Brian <inaudible>, who was just in corn IBI. I tweet I trade with the eye dry client quarter, actually budding credible, and that's who I am. I'm actually bullying by.
